Description

1920's Vintage Weidlich Fountain Pen, Green Striated
Celluloid - RESTORED
with
Warranted #2
14 kt
FLEXIBLE
nib
Ready-to-use refurbished vintage Weidlich fountain pen with Warranted flexible 14 kt gold Fine nib
Pen made in Cincinnati, Ohio
Striking green striated celluloid with gold trim that is in very good condition.
Pen
:
Green chatoyant (
iridescent
) striated celluloid barrel and cap with black coned top and bottom.
Celluloid iridescence (chatoyance) is difficult to capture in photograph -- looks great when you twirl it in the light
Lever-filled  [to fill, lift lever, submerge nib in ink, then flip the lever back down].  Filling instructions will be included.
Confirmed lever-filling system successfully filled the pen with water and flushed the water out
Gold-filled trim - tiny scratch across lever width (
magnification
required to see).  Dark color of pen and shiny surface of lever
precludes camera from capturing this small scratch.
Cap:
Screws on -- barrel and cap threads mate well.
Single cap band
Arrow clip
Clip easily slides over and hugs a pocket tightly.
The 2 drill-through holes in the cap are standard.  They allow the pen's cap to be removed without causing a vacuum, which would suck the ink out of the nib and make a mess.
Hour glass section.  Both feed and section are ebonite.
Ebonite is superior to plastic for flexible nibs because it can act as an "ink capacitor" storing and releasing ink when needed.
Ebonite sections have a "warmth" and natural feel that plastic does not have making it a superior section material in terms of "feel"
No imprints to identify pen manufacturer.  However, this pen was in a collection of Weidlich-only pens, several of which had this same clip plus the Weidlich imprint.
Nib
:
Nib is 14 kt #2 Warranted gold nib
Nib point is  Fine (look at the writing sample photo) and writes smoothly
Flexes from Fine (0.45 mm) to BBB+ (2.0 mm)
Normal writing has a very nice range of line variation and shading.  See right-hand bottom corner of writing sample.
Imprint reads:
WARRANTED
14 KT
2
MADE IN
U.S.A.
Nib size = #2
See condition of nib tip in photos - excellent condition
WARNING
: flexing this nib beyond the 1/16 inch range will likely damage the nib, either by springing it or initiating a crack that will grow with every use.  Consider 1/16 inch the extreme maximum, and not the everyday writing line width.
Restoration included:
Soaking, disassembling, ultrasonically cleaning, scrubbing, flushing, buffing, and waxing
Nib unit (section, nib and feed) was
disassembled
, soaked, and scrubbed.  Nib was polished with jeweler's cloth
Gold-filled trim polished with jeweler's cloth
Old sac removed and replaced with a new sac
Pressure bar replaced
Tested filling system with water and with ink
Tested installed nib by filling pen with ink to confirm it writes smoothly and that the feed system can keep up with the flex writing
Flushed nib after test; however, a hint of the Waterman Harmonious Green
ink may remain in the nib
Thoroughly inspected.  No cracks or chips or dents or significant scratches.  See photos.

IS THE NIB MISALIGNED?:
Asked if I could confirm if the nib was misaligned.  My response:
The slight misalignment that is visible is
completely
eliminated by simply touching the nib to paper with no pressure. The tines are so flexible that the tines are aligned the moment the nib touches paper. Note the nib ball is 0.025 inches high. The photographs are highly magnified. The vertical misalignment on the bottom of the nib (writing surface side) is about .0015 inches. The nib is smooth to write with. When you FLIP the nib over, however, the vertical misalignment is greater, and is in fact scratchy to write with upsidedown ("reverse writing").
I can confirm the nib is smooth to write with
. Reverse writing, however, is scratchy.
