Description
Presented is a fabulous English Georgian sterling silver tea caddy. This piece was made by Hester Bateman and dates to 1786. The tea caddy is done in a handsome, classical form, with a beaded design around the top and bottom. Both sides of the caddy have an oval cartouche above a wreath design. Engraved in the cartouche on one side is a marriage type monogram of S above JE, while the opposing side has a crest of a griffin's head. The lid of the caddy has a finely carved green finial in the shape of a pineapple. This piece is in great overall condition. There is some wear to the crest on one side of the caddy, which is not a removal, but just the result of standard handling and polishing. There are some minor dents to the body, but this is hardly noticeable. There are no splits, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter L for 1786, King George III's head duty mark, and the maker's mark for Hester Bateman.
The caddy measures about 6 inches from end to end and stands about 6 1/2 inches tall.
This piece weighs 404 grams or 14.3 regular ounces.
