Obverse: On the obverse is a stunningly detailed look at an African buffalo. The bottom of this face bears the coat of arms of South Africa. The name of the issue country, "SOUTH AFRICA," is inscribed to the left, while the name of the series, "BIG FIVE," and date, "2021," are noted to the right.
Reverse: The reverse design offers another look at the animal, this time head on. Two of the creatures are displayed side by side such that the holder only sees a complete look at one by looking at two coins side by side. Inscriptions noting the coin's face value, "FIVE RAND," its weight, "1 OZ," and its purity, "AG 999," are included in two concentric circles in the middle of this face.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on a Big 5 label. NGC graded the piece Proof 70, thus indicating that it appears perfect under 5x magnification. NGC also certified this piece Ultra Cameo and First Releases. The UC designation credits it for having deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices, while the FR certification means that it was submitted for grading no more than 30 days after its initial release from the mint.
