1997 KNYSNA SEAHORSE  R2  - 1 OUNCE SILVER PROOF
2 Rand face value / denomination.
COIN IN CAPSULE, INCLUDES DISPLAY CASE AND COA
LIGHT TO MODERATE TONING WITH A VERY SLIGHT PINK & RAINBOW HUE.
This has very faint pink and rainbow toning. This color is barely detectable but is definitely there. The seahorse coin is a very popular  coin that has significant demand. It has a great design that collectors love. Examples are relatively common but are
by no means cheap.
This coin is often described as "RARE !!!" but that is not true. Examples are easy to find and usually priced below 0 for good ungraded examples.
The people that describe these as being
rare are either
ignorant
or are being willfully deceptive
.
This includes a COA or Certificate of Authenticity from the South African Mint. The COA shows a mintage of 3000, which is just the maximum limit.
The South African Mint has the rather poor habit of printing the certificates in advance with the mintage showing their maximum planned amount to strike.
That would be fine and a good plan if they always carried through and struck the planned maximum amount.
However, they usually strike less than the maximum stated amount and it
is usually a LOT less
.
I've referred to Hern's Catalog of South African coins (2018 edition)
which states that no (exact) mintage figures are available.
The actual mintage is probably around 2,100 coins but possibly less.  My estimate is
based on the amount of R2 proof coins that were struck in the immediate years before and after 1997.
Here we have a good example at a competitive price that has a nice appearance.  It's domiciled in and ships from the United States.
This has no readily apparent
defects aside from toning and the clear, focused, large images affords you the chance to examine it closely.
I've taken photos from
several different angles to give a good idea of its condition.
I sell sealed sets also
so be sure to see my other listings - I may even have a sealed set on auction on occasion.
You may want to check out my other items as I have lots of South African silver coins, included graded and raw coins.
I'll be listing a limited number of  other types of Mint-Sealed South African silver coins in the next few days.

International Buyers in
South Africa
MUST select the "Standard International Shipping" option for .  This is because I will have to use a courier instead of the normal USPS carrier due to problems with S.A.P.O. .    However, buyers in South Africa will not have to pay additional postage for additional coins provided that they use the shopping cart and only send one payment. Any amount over in postage will be refunded provided only one payment is sent.
